Intro
I am based in our Brighton solicitors office and assist Cate Searle as part of the Community Care Law team. This includes planning and paying for care, the role of property in care, understanding the complexities of the NHS Continuing Healthcare Funding regime and preparing for Deputyship and other applications to the Court of Protection.
Expertise
I have particular expertise in:
- Advising clients on planning ahead and the valuation of property in the context of paying for care
- Advising on Court of Protection applications including Deputyship
- Advising on safeguarding adults at risk
- Assessing NHS CHC eligibility and whether there are grounds for appeal
- Care needs and funding issues dealing with the impact of catastrophic injury.
Clients
At Martin Searle Solicitors, I predominantly work with elderly or vulnerable clients who need care and with their families; and those needing to consider care in the future. I also work with people and their families who find themselves unexpectedly in the care system as a result of catastrophic injury, including acquired brain injury.
Qualifications
I have a degree in Geography from Bristol University and a degree in History of Art from the Open University. I completed my Law Conversion course at Sussex University and Law Society Finals at Guildford College of Law.
Other experience
As a solicitor, I came into Community Care Law via insurance litigation, where my specialisms were injury and property matters. I was previously head of department at a large regional practice, before adopting the same title at a long-established Sussex firm. My injury experience includes catastrophic injury and acquired brain injury, which I can draw on to advise on the community care angle. In addition to this, my work in property insurance litigation informs advice I give on property issues in community care, such as the role of property in funding and planning for care.
I have a life too
Painting, travel and books are all important to me. Fairness matters, as does equality of opportunity in education. I campaign to keep our green spaces green and our seas as nature intended. Family and friends are at the core of everything I do.
