Community Care Law Solicitor

Abi Street

“I bring a background in Criminal Law with me to the Community Care field, facilitating a wider perspective on cases where there may be abuse/ exploitation concerns, ongoing safeguarding investigations or challenging behaviour. I have habitually advocated to make the voices of vulnerable people heard and to ensure account is taken of their needs.”

Intro

I am a solicitor in the Community Care Law and Court of Protection (Welfare) Team, working under the supervision of Cate Searle and Paula Jones. I advise on Paying for Care, Continuing Healthcare, Care Commissioning and Best Interest Decision-Making.

Before developing Community Care expertise, I previously worked in criminal law in both Defence and Prosecution roles, advocating for and protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals in difficult and pressurised circumstances. I changed my area of specialism further to gaining personal insight into the challenges faced by individuals needing to navigate the community care experience and the difficulties in ensuring individuals’ complex care needs are met.

I bring over a decade’s worth of evidential analysis, case assessment and case preparation experience to my role, facilitating the provision of sound objective opinions on the merits of a case and the optimal presentation of a client’s position.

Qualifications

I read Anthropology at Durham University, prior to converting to Law and qualifying as a solicitor in 2005 at a niche White Collar Crime and Media firm in Soho.  I went on to further qualify as a Criminal Law Duty Solicitor, representing individuals at the sharp end of the justice system in police stations and in magistrates courts, as well as working on large high profile cases. I moved on to become a Senior Crown Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, experiencing a different side of the system. I am enjoying bringing this life experience to Community Care and Court of Protection (Welfare) Law and drawing on the firm’s expertise to advise clients in this complex and fascinating area of law.

I have a life too

A climbing and mountaineering past has given way to a more settled family life, exploring the countryside with kids, a collie and a campervan.
